11/365 – Done is Better than Perfect.
This is indeed one of my favorite quotes and I use it all the time.
Is it better to get something perfect, with the risk of not getting it on time or at all; or is it better to just get it done?
I don’t think there’s only one possible answer but my opinion is that it is far better to get it done. This has been my vision on a lot of projects and to some of what I consider my best ideas: things where I was scared about the challenge, things where I didn’t know where to start, things to learn and to experiment. To get it done without aspiring to perfection gave me the chance to have something in my hands to evaluate a progress.
The Postcards project started with exactly this intention and developed thanks to this approach.
Do I have 366 videos I like and are perfect? Surely I don’t.
Do I have at least a few that I think are perfect? I totally do.
And, more importantly, I have 366 products that include experiments, failures, crazy ideas, attempts…I have them and I can use them, to get better and eventually perfect.
Anyway, perfection is hard to define. So why bother?
