10/365 – Breaking the Rules.

One of the best ways to get new ideas is to break the rules, to play a new game, to think out of the box.
These are all great ways to say it, but what does it really mean?

I think about it a lot and I came up with my own definition of breaking the rules. To me, that means trying out the uncomfortable, doing something for the first time, something that shows you naked in front of other, trying something that makes you feel insecure. Breaking the rules means that you make up your own new ones and use the old ones as a reference for what you want to leave behind. It means making progress on your own thing.

Here are some thoughts in the shape of a list (I love lists!):

  • Take your thoughts and trash them. Start from, literally, the opposite of your starting point.
  • Ask yourself: what if? Give yourself at least 10 answers.
  • Make it really difficult by creating constraints (constraints help creativity, creativity helps to generate ideas)
  • Create something and iterate it as fast as possible.
  • Put it out there and observe the reaction.
  • Take something somebody else has done and do the opposite.
  • Give yourself not enough time.
  • Make a plan and then improvise.
  • Make a list. Erase it and start with just what you remember.
